A tight and yet oh so dirty power trio, The Reed Effect has fully hit their stride with A Strange Curiosity. Dynamic and grunge driven, The Reed Effect are a hard hitting up tempo rock band at times, while at others they a psychedelic dreamscape. Their sound is like Foghat and Soundgarden had a baby while Monster Truck delivered. Not only is their EP versatile, in just one song, ‘Red Rover’, there are definite progressive psychedelic elements of The Doors s and at other moments it’s reminiscent of Rage Against The Machine. The album is a salute to the rock of the 1990’s.
This is not to say that The Reed Effects sound is an amalgam of other bands. They are simply so catchy and striking on A Strange Curiosity that I wanted to draw parallels to some of my favorite other bands that utilize this type of musical mastery throughout rock music. I think out of all the tracks ‘Down in Here’ is my favourite. It is so raw and just dripping with crazy guitar licks that I actually listened to it twice when I first heard it. That is to say, these commanding riffs and driving rhythms will leave you wanting more. Be sure to check out The Reed Effect’s live debut of A Strange Curiosity on November 10th at the Mod Club in Toronto.
